January 2018 was when I packed up and moved across the country. To be more specific it was January 17th when I first felt that cold chill on my face, icy but so refreshing. It also reminded me of how far away from home I was, and what my next steps were going to be to get settled into my new 'home'.
I immigrated as an International student, enrolled into Public Relations and Event Management at Sault College. This diploma, along with my 3 year BSc. in Mass Communication from India helped me land some amazing internships and roles in the community.
My program helped me build social skills in a new community, meet and connect with new people and network my way to opportunities that would help me gain permanent residency.
During my time in school:
I focused on school, fun and exploring the community. Everything was new and exciting, so many first times and memorable moments.
I quickly learned the importance of volunteering, its direct impact on building your network and also jobs. I volunteered at the Science Festival, some events at Sault College and also participated in fundraisers my classmates hosted. So many wonderful opportunities and moments to give back and connect.
Through these experiences, I branched out and met new people. I was introduced and referred to job opportunities and eventually that led me to land my first job at the Innovation Centre. Hint: this is where I volunteered for 2 years :)
And yet again networking helped me land my second role in Sault Ste Marie, with the Sault Community Career Centre this time.
Funny story, while working as a server at a restaurant, I met and served my future boss (I did not know this during that time) and during my interview, this was a great conversation piece that helped me feel more connected to the panelist and eventually land the job!
Each opportunity helped me grow my network, skills and land the next best opportunity that eventually led me to apply for and gain my permanent residency in Canada.
And do you want to know what was more rewarding than gaining my PR?
Applying for and getting my mom’s visit visa approved and finally seeing her after almost 5 years away.
An immigrant’s journey is not an easy one, especially as an international student without family in a foreign country. But with patience and hard work - you eventually see all the efforts bring in the rewards you were seeking. As long as you feel fulfilled, you know you are on the right path.

We want to see you succeed and will work with you to develop a strategy to make this possible.
