Networking: the pathway to success!

About 85% of jobs are filled through networking!!

According to Hubspot, not us.

If you are still looking for a reason or two to start networking let us help!

We hosted an in-person sector specific networking event on March 22, 2023! A big thank you to all the employers, job seekers and community members that joined us to support, share and network :)

Why did we host a networking event?

As an organization that supports newcomers to immigrate, we understand the intercultural challenges many newcomers face while trying to start their professional journey in Canada.

For example: In Canada, we have more of an individualistic mindset, whereas newcomers from several countries like India, Philippines, Sri Lanka, China etc. have a collective mindset and culture. Which makes it more challenging for newcomers to adjust to professional and cultural environments in a new country.

Another example is the process of getting hired. In most countries CV's and portfolios with tons of experience and certifications will most likely land you a great job however, in Canada you need a strong network to support that.

Here's how and why you should start networking TODAY!

1.  Create a LinkedIn Presence

Did you know that 8 people are hired through LinkedIn every
minute

Having a LinkedIn presence does not mean posting every minute and becoming an influencer. What we mean by presence is being active, engaged and informed. Stay connected with relevant people in your community, industry and prospective industries. Ask questions, share valuable information and create a memorable impression, digitally.

Keeping your profile
up-to-date allows recruiters to reach you for roles you might be a good fit for. Have a professional headshot - something that captures your personality, a catchy headline and a concise about you - highlighting achievements, successes and milestones. Try to quantity this data for better results.

2. Attend Events

Virtual, in-person, hybrid - attend events that will help not only grow your network but also gain valuable insights, trends and conduct industry research. When attending events, be sure to ask questions - this shows how engaged you are, share insights you might have that could enrich the conversation - you want to be remembered and, most importantly make the most of the experience - don’t focus on the outcome of getting hired, focus on relationship building.

3. Memberships in relevant associations

Joining relevant clubs, associations and committees can help you get one step closer to your professional goals. Lean on members for mentorship, advice, guidance and leads to additional hidden opportunities in their networks.

4. Volunteer

A great way to grow your network and gain valuable experience is by volunteering. A few hours a week doing something you love that not only enhances your professional development but also makes you more involved and engaged in the community you choose to settle. Many newcomers have gained full-time employment from volunteering at non-profits - it’s a proven way to get your name out there!

By networking in Canada, you can establish connections, learn about job opportunities, and gain valuable insights into the Canadian job market. Building your professional network takes time, so it's important to start early and be persistent in your efforts.
