FAQs

  • What level of English do I need to apply?

We recommend an intermediate level of English, equivalent to B1–B2. This level allows you to communicate effectively with Canadian employers and meet the requirements of the labor and immigration process.

  • What occupations are in demand in Canada?

Some occupations are in high demand in Canada, and there are agreements or programs that facilitate hiring foreign workers in specific sectors.

    • Under the Canada–Colombia Free Trade Agreement (CCOFTA), there is demand in technical and technological fields, including: Mechanical, Aviation, Electrical and Electronics, Construction, Manufacturing, Mining, among others. These occupations often provide a more straightforward pathway to Permanent Residency (PR), for example through programs like RCIP (Rural Community Immigration Pilot).
    • Programs like RCIP can lead to PR for: Technicians and professionals in mechanical fields, Aviation technicians, Technicians and professionals in electricity and electronics, Construction and manufacturing operators, Industrial electronics specialists.
    • Other in-demand occupations with PR potential include: Early Childhood Educators (ECE) and Social Workers.
    • Additional sectors in demand (Hospitality, Health, Technology) may require special approvals from Canadian authorities.
  • What documents do I need to join the Talent Pool?

To join the Talent Pool, you will typically need:

    • Updated CV / resume
    • English test results
    • Copy of diplomas and transcripts
    • Verification of work experience (employment letters, contracts, certificates)
  • What documents are required to apply for a work permit?

When applying for a work permit through IRCC, some of the most common documents include:

    • Passport
    • Police certificates for countries where you have lived more than 6 months (must meet IRCC requirements)
    • Medical exam (if required by your profession), completed by an IRCC-approved physician
    • CV / resume with your work experience
    • Proof of funds (if applicable): funds must be yours, transferable, and available for settlement
    • Certified translation: any document not in English or French must be officially translated
  • What qualifications are required for jobs?

Qualifications vary depending on the occupation. Some professions are regulated in Canada (e.g., engineers) and require Canadian equivalency or licensing. If you are a licensed professional in Colombia (e.g., engineer), you may start with technical-level work while completing the Canadian credential recognition process.

  • How long does the work permit process take?

If you are an active Talent Pool member, iCA will start sharing your profile to employers. This process can take 6–12 months, depending on factors such as demand, regulations, and seasonality.

    Process steps:

    • Job offer: You must first have a job offer. Availability depends on employer demand and timing.
    • Work permit application: Once you have the job offer, applying for a work permit through IRCC can take 6–12 months, depending on different factors like the type of permit requested and country of application.

Processing time begins when IRCC receives a complete application with all required documents and may be extended if additional documentation is requested. iCA will support and assist you through these steps.

  • What are the costs?

    • Recruitment costs: Covered by the employer
    • Worker costs: You are responsible for work permit fees, biometrics (if applicable), and other travel expenses as required by IRCC
    • Medical exams: If required, you must pay for the medical exam with an IRCC-approved panel physician
