How to Use Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI ®) to Support Diversity, Inclusion and Equity

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI ®) is the main tool that JJiC uses to facilitate intercultural competence training for individuals and organizations.

In 1986, Dr. Mitchell Hammer and Dr. Milton Bennett developed the IDI, a theory-based (not opinion-based) psychometric assessment. It’s been constantly updated since.

The IDI provides a benchmark for individuals and groups to continue building up their intercultural competence in an intentional and organic way. It has been subjected to rigorous statistical testing to ensure the effectiveness of the results. Organizations in North America and around the world have been using this tool.

JJiC houses two IDI Qualified Administrators (QA) to engage you in training, consulting and coaching.

What is culture?

We believe that “culture” means “how we do things around here”. We see individuals and groups represent different cultures, based on their past experience, education, trauma, sexuality, race, rules, shared meanings, etc.

When we work with different people, we are essentially navigating through different value systems and world views. They drive one’s behaviour, decision making and conflict management. Therefore, in order to be effective in our communication and interaction, intercultural competence is a critical skill to master.

The IDI continuum below depicts how individuals can move from seeing one’s own culture at the centre of everything (monocultural Mindset), to learning adaptive behaviours to be effective in a cross-cultural setting (intercultural Mindset).

What is the IDI?

  • A 50-item questionnaire available in 15 languages
  • You will receive your individual report, a group average report (if applicable) and a customized intercultural competence development plan

The IDI helps you to...

  • Understand you and your team’s overall intercultural competencies
  • Determine the needs and growing edges for effective intercultural training
  • Share a common language and framework for learning and discussion
  • Increase self-awareness and the awareness of your organization
  • Gain more clarity on your team/organization’s culture and goals
  • Measure the effectiveness of your training, consulting and learning
